David Ruebain

Diversity and Inclusion Consultant

David has a lifelong commitment to diversity and inclusion – as a lawyer, strategist, board member, consultant and chief executive. He is an experienced coach, facilitator and an ADR Group accredited mediator, particularly working with senior leadership teams. He brings with him extensive knowledge in disability and equality law and practice and strategic development in many sectors, including education, sport, performing arts and research. David is passionate about D&I; both as a tool for organisational success and for wider community cohesion and solidarity.

David practised as a solicitor for 21 years as Partner at and Founder of the department of Education, Equality and Disability Law at Levenes Solicitors. He left Levenes to become the first Director of Legal Policy at the newly established Equality & Human Rights Commission, responsible for work on what became the Equality Act 2010. He left EHRC to become Chief Executive of Equality Challenge Unit, a policy and research agency funded to advance equality & diversity in the UK further and higher education and research sectors. He is also an Equality Adviser to the English FA Premier League, where he has been involved in the development of diversity and inclusion in football since 2005.

David is also an accomplished researcher, Visiting Professor of Law at Birkbeck University of London, and writer. He co-edited Blackstone’s Guide to the Equality Act (the 4th edition of which has just been published) and Education, Disability and Social Policy (the 2nd edition of which has just been commissioned). He is a founding member of The Times Newspaper Law Panel and member of the Editorial Board of Disability & Society.
